VPP-IZM-2018/1-0018 “Indivīda, sabiedrības un valsts mijiedarbība kopējā Latvijas vēstures procesā: vērtību konflikti un kopīgu vērtību veidošanās vēsturisku lūzumu posmos” ietvaros.; The collection includes the abstracts of the conference “Individual, Society, and Power at the Turning Points in the History of the Baltic Region”. The reports of historians, sociologists, theologians, and lawyers from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and Poland offer a look at a wide range of phenomena that have been observed and influenced the turning points of history: the function of social control mechanisms, their diversity and their impact on individuals, society, and public policy; the role and place of ethnic groups in Latvia; the contacts of the political centres of Europe and the territory of Latvia, which resulted in the interaction of culture, skills, and religious currents.
The conference is organised and this collection of abstracts is prepared in the framework of the State Research Programme “Latvian Heritage and Future Challenges for the Country’s Sustainability”, project No. VPP-IZM-2018/1-0018 “Interaction between the individual, the society, and the state in process of the history of Latvia: conflicting values and formation of shared values during historical turning points”.

International conference “Individual and War. 100 years since the War of Independence in Latvia” aims to analyse the consequences that the processes and developments caused by warfare had on society in the territory of Latvia and neighbouring countries from 1914 to 1921, by focusing on social indicators that most clearly reveal the impact and influence of war-related processes on changes in society. The concept of “society” is here understood as both the military and civilian population in its entirety, because previously existent traditional borders between the both became increasingly blurred during the First World War. The conference aims to achieve fuller understanding about the total and all-encompassing character of the war by disclosing the variety and different ways how individuals as well as different groups of society experienced the War. This experience was far from monolithic.

This volume comprises abstracts of the reports presented at the Congress.
The 2nd Congress of Latvian Historians departed from usual form (of paralell panels with scientists presenting the results of their individual research) and was devoted to the exchange of ideas on important topics for every historian – to those working in research institutions as well as in institutions devoted to preservation of historical sources or concerned with popularization of history. Discussions were held on such topics as: the necessity and role of congresses of Latvian historians; history and communication, namely how a scientific product created by a historian comes to the notice of other historians, how such a product reaches society in general and also how ideas created by historians reach schoolchildren; interaction between history and anthropology, sociology, literary science etc., and how achievements in these disciplines during the last five years have added to the understanding of the past; methods and methodology that historians use; the relationship between science and the ruling power, and the influence that the ideological tendencies of a given period of time have on the works of historians.
