1. Piesaistes stilu aptauja (Attachment Styles inventory, Sperling & Berman, 1991). Latviešu valodas versiju adaptējusi Baiba Martinsone (2003).
2. Pašnāvības domu aptauja (The Positive and Negative suicide ideation inventory, Osman et al., 1998).
There is an origination of suicidal thoughts and intentions before every attempted suicide (Diekstra, 1996; Moscicki, 1997; Paykel & Rassaby, 1978; Pokorny, 1960). Early noticed suicidal thoughts and intentions would help to avoid the completion of suicide (Deane, Wilson & Ciarrochi, 2001), so it is important to understand the emergence of suicidal thoughts and intentions and factors that promote the act of suicide or protect from suicidal thoughts.
Attachment style is often mentioned as one of the factors that influence the emergence of suicidal thoughts (Allen & Land, 1999; Bearman & Moody, 2004; Biringen, 1994; Esposito & Clum, 2002; Fergusson et al., 2003; Kimbrough et al., 1996; Nickerson & Nagle, 2004; Paulson & Everall, 2003; Rubenstein et al., 1998).
The aim of this paper is to find out what correlations exist between attachment styles to parents, attachment to romantic partner and suicidal thought ratings in young adults.
Respondents of the study were 110 students (65 females and 45 males) aging from 18 to 25 years with the average length of the romantic relationships 27 months or 2 years and 3 months. The average age of respondents was 22 years.
Methods used in the study:
1. Attachment Styles inventory (Sperling & Berman, 1991). Adapted in Latvian by Baiba Martinsone (2003).
2. The Positive and Negative suicide ideation inventory (Osman et al., 1998). Adapted in Latvian by Linda Broduža in her Bachelor’s thesis (2010).
The results of this study present evidence that attachment to romantic partner is more often correlated with suicidal thoughts than attachment to father, but correlations between attachment style to mother and suicidal thoughts are not found. Whereas statistically significant correlation between attachment style to father and attachment to romantic partner is found, but correlation between attachment style to mother and attachment to romantic partner – only for males. Statistically significant correlations between attachment style to mother and attachment to father are also found. It can be concluded that insecure (ambivalent and hostile) attachment is correlated with suicidal thoughts in young adults.
Key words: suicidal thoughts; attachment style; parents; romantic partner.
