The issue about the students’ loyalty to their institutions of higher education has not yet been studied in Latvia. The studies carried out in Germany, Norway, Japan, Australia and Spain show that students’ loyalty is treated in the aspect of customers’ loyalty although the essence of the notion contradicts the conception of customers’ loyalty. Especially topical it becomes at times when the higher education institution puts forward its aims of action, mission and vision, which are often ambitious and the whole staff of the organization should participate to attain them. According to the Law on Higher education institutions (1995), the academic and general personnel as well as students constitute the staff of the higher education institution.
The Master’s thesis Students’ loyalty in university type institutions of higher education in Latvia focuses to find out the difference in students’ loyalty in universities of Latvia and the following hypothesis has been put forward – students of all university type institutions of higher education (DU, LiepU, LLU, LU, RSU, RTU) are equally loyal.
The results of the study reveal that the comparison of students’ loyalty in six universities does not present statistically significant differences; however, when doing the mutual comparison of the university groups – those situated in Riga (LU, RSU, RTU) and those in the regions (DU, LiepU, LLU), the differences become noticeable – higher level of loyalty is characteristic to students of regional universities, it means, they are ready to make some effort to do more than it is required from them for the university to gain success, to consider themselves a part of the given university, and in the long run- they are trustworthy and honest students.
Key words: loyalty, students’ loyalty, Latvia university type institutions of higher education.
