In this paper the formation and use of ἦθος in Cicero’s speeches „Against Piso” (In Pisonem) and „In the defence of Milo” (Pro Milone) has been studied. Ancient Greek word „ἦθος” basically means „character”, but as a rhetorical term it means “character as it appears in a speech”.
This work consists of theoretical and analytical part. In the theoritical part it has been inquired into ancient authors’ theoretical views on ἦθος un evolution of ἦθος as a rhetorical term. In the analytical part it has been inquired into main persons’ characters and their formation in both speeches, based upon Cicero’s theoretical views on ἦθος.
