Atslēgas vārdi: apstiprināšanas kļūda, psihologi-iesācēji, kompetentie psihologi, psihologi-eksperti The goal of the study was to explore the extent of confirmation bias in the process of deriving clinical hypothesis depending on psychologist’s professional experience and answer the question does the extent of confirmation bias decrease with gathering the professional experience. 44 psychologists divided in three groups took part in the study. In the group of psychologists-beginners there were 17 respondents included whose job experience working with clients was less than 2 years. In the group of competent psychologists 15 respondents with job experience from 4 to 6 years were included. In the group of psychologists-experts 12 respondents with job experience more than 8 years took part. To answer the research question the modified method of Snyder and Swann (Snyder & Swann, 1978) made for measuring the extent of confirming the hypothesis derived and includes the case study about a client with a request to make an assumption about possible problem client has. To minimize the influence of undesirable factors each of three groups were divided in two subgroups - to the half of respondents after deriving a hypothesis it was offered to ask 7 questions which would help them to understand client’s problem better by themselves, but to the other half of respondents it was offered to choose 7 questions from the list of 28 questions offered by author.
The analysis of results show that the results of sample of competent psychologists were significantly different from the normatively assumed boundary of confirmation bias indicating the tendency of this sample to verify their hypothesis in a confirming way. The statistical significance of confirmation bias decreases with gathering the professional experience in regards to results of competent psychologists and psychologists-experts. There is a tendency but without statistical significance that the extent of confirmation bias increases with changing the status from beginner to competent psychologist. There is also no statistically significant difference between psychologists-beginners and psychologists-experts. It may conclude that the influence of experience on the confirmation bias isn’t linear. Consequently the goal of the study was achieved and to the question of research it can be answered partly affirmative.
Key words: confirmation bias, psychologits-beginners, competent psychologists, psychologists-experts-
