There always has been the question how to make learning process not only more interesting and interactive but also productive and practical that would demonstrate the use of knowledge in real everyday life and would linger longer in students’ memory. Applying problem solving activities in the development of students’ critical thinking skills in one of the ways to provide the natural learning process and to implement acquired knowledge in real life.
The Diploma Paper deals with such a topical problem as the development of students’ critical thinking skills through problem solving activities. The case study was carried out in Purvciems Secondary School in Form 10 in order to find out whether students’ critical thinking skills can be developed with the help of the activities based on problem solving. Questionnaires and interviews were used as data collection methods.
Students’ questionnaire № 1 was used in order to indicate the extent to which students felt they used critical thinking skills during English classes. Teachers’ questionnaire № 1 was used in order to indicate the extent to which teachers felt their students used critical thinking skills during the process of problem solving. Students’ questionnaire № 2 was used in order to get feedback and find out students’ attitude towards the activities introduced during English classes. Students’ questionnaire № 3 was used in order to indicate the development of critical thinking skills after implementing problem solving activities at the lessons of English. Finally, the interviews with English language teachers were conducted to find out their attitude towards the development of students’ critical thinking skills.
The analysis of the data of the questionnaires to teachers and students suggested that the development of critical thinking skills through problem solving activities deserved more attention. The data of the interview also proved that the theoretical background of the development of critical thinking skills should be given to the teachers to make them aware of this issue.
The analysis of the Students’ questionnaire № 3 gave the feedback and the evidence of the development of critical thinking skills through problem solving activities. The research showed that not only students enjoyed using problem solving activities, but also it proved to help students to develop their critical thinking skills.
