There is a common perception that all learning should be serious and solemn in nature, and that if one is having fun and there is hilarity and laughter, then it is not really learning. This is a misconception. It is possible to learn a language as well as enjoy oneself at the same time. One of the best ways of doing this is through games. Therefore, the role of games in teaching and learning vocabulary cannot be denied. However, in order to achieve the most from vocabulary games, it is essential that suitable games are chosen. Whenever a game is to be conducted, the number of students, proficiency level, cultural context, timing, learning topic, and the classroom settings are factors that should be taken into account.
The present paper attempts to investigate the effectiveness of learning vocabulary through games in secondary school. The purpose of this Diploma paper is to examine some traditional techniques and compare them with the use of language games for vocabulary presentation and revision, in order to determine whether they are more successful in presenting and revising vocabulary than other methods.
As a result of the experiment it was found that games are useful and more successful than other methods of vocabulary presentation and revision.
The present research has produced some evidence which shows that an interested and involved class, learning through several fun-filled English language games achieves higher results. Secondly, healthy competition that forms an elementary part of the English games encourages player discovery, examination and a voluntary involvement of the students in the learning process. Thirdly it leads to a better bonding between the teacher and the students. Most importantly, these games usher in the real world context into the classroom and thus increase the students’ capacity to speak English in a practical and flexible manner. Therefore it’s no wonder that the vocabulary games are fast becoming invincible tools for mastering the English language.
