Komiksu izmantošana vidusskolēnu iepazīstināšanai ar aktuālajiem notikumiem Lielbritānijas laikrakstos

Abstract

Diplomdarba tēma ir "Komiksu izmantošana vidusskolēnu iepazīstināšanai ar aktuāliem notikumiem Lielbritānijas laikrakstos". Autentiskie materiāli, kuri var tikt izmantoti angļu valodas stundās, ir komiksi. Autors uzskata, ka komiksi nav atbilstoši novērtēti un izmantoti angļu valodas stundās, lai gan tie ietver sevī autentisku valodu un var reprezentēt valsts kultūru un sabiedrību. Latvijas Vispārējās vidējās izglītības standartā (2007) ir minēts, ka skolēniem vajadzētu mācīt starpkultūru aspektus, tai skaitā, kopīgo un atšķirīgo dažādās kultūrās, autors tiecas atklāt vai komiksi, atainoti Lielbritānijas laikrakstos, var tikt izmantoti angļu valodas stundās, lai rosinātu Lielbritānijas aktuālo notikumu apzināšanos. Atsevišķa gadījuma pētījums tika veikts Jelgavas Spīdolas vidusskolā no 28. janvāra līdz 19. martam. Pētījuma paraugs bija 28 skolnieki no divām vienpadsmitajām klasēm un 3 angļu valodas skolotāji, kuri strādā ar vidusskolas skolēniem. 3angļu valodas skolotāji tika intervēti un intervijas tika analizētas. 9 komiksi tika atlasīti Lielbritānijas laikrakstos un stādīti priekšā skolēniem angļu valodas stundās. 7 aktivitātes tika izmantotas, balstītas uz komiksiem, un pārbaudes uzdevums tika izmantots, lai pārbaudītu skolēnu izpratni par komiksu saturu. 2 diskusijas, balstītas uz 2 komiksiem, tika ierosinātas un ierakstītas angļu valodas stundās. Iegūtie atsevišķā pētījuma dati liecina, ka komiksi var tikt izmantoti ne tikai dažādām aktivitātēm, bet arī lai iepazīstinātu skolēnus ar Lielbritānijas kultūru. Pārbaudes uzdevumu un diskusiju analīze atklāj, ka skolēni izprot galveno domu, interpretētu komiksos, un spēj izteikt savu viedokli par notikumiem atainotiem šajos komiksos. Ņemot vērā skolotāju intervijas, var secināt, ka autentiskie materiāli, līdzīgi komiksiem, ir piemēroti materiāli Lielbritānijas kultūras iepazīstināšanai un mācīšanai. Pēc autora domām, angļu valodas skolotājiem vajadzētu apsvērt jauninājumus, kuri var tikt izmantoti angļu valodas stundās, lai piesaistītu skolēnu uzmanību un mācītu skolniekus daudz efektīgāk. Tā kā mūsdienās skolnieki ir moderno tehnoloģiju ietekmēti, skolnieku motivācija mācīties klasē samazinās. Komiksi var tikt izmantoti kā viens no jauninājumiem, jo komiksi ir autentiski materiāli un nesatur tikai autentisku valodu, bet arī kultūru. Komiksi sastāv no bildēm un īsiem tekstiem, autors uzskata, ka šī iemesla dēļ, komiksi ir motivējoši un atmiņā paliekoši, turklāt, balstoties uz komiksiem, var tikt izmantotas daudz un dažādas aktivitātes.

The theme of the Diploma Paper is Comic Strips for Introducing Secondary School Students to Current Events in British Newspapers. One of the authentic materials that can be used in the English language lessons is the comic strips. The author thinks that the comic strips are not sufficiently evaluated and used in the English language lessons, although the comic strips contain authentic language and can represent the culture of the country and people in it. It is mentioned in the Standard of General Secondary Education in Latvia (2007) that the students should be introduced to cross-cultural aspects, including the similarities and difference of other cultures, the author aims to discover whether the comic strips depicted in British newspapers can be used in English lessons to raise awareness of current events in Britain. The case study was carried out in Jelgava Spīdola Secondary School from 28th January to 19th March. The research sample was 28 students from two eleventh grades and 3 English language teachers working with the secondary school students. 3 English language teachers were interviewed and the interviews were analyzed. 9 comic strips were selected in the British newspapers and introduced to the students in the English language lessons. 7 activities were carried out based on the comic strips and the tests were used to test the students’ understanding of the content of the comic strips. 2 discussions based on the 2 comic strips were raised and recorded in the English language lessons. The data collected during the case study show that the comic strips can be used not only to carry out different kinds of activities, but also to introduce the culture of Britain to the students. The analysis of the tests and discussions reveal that the students understand the message interpreted in the comic strips and are able to express their opinions about the events interpreted in them. Considering the teachers’ interviews, it can be concluded that the authentic materials, like the comic strips, are appropriate materials for introducing and teaching British culture. To the author’s mind, the English teachers should consider the innovations that can be brought in the English language classes to attract students’ attention and to teach them more effectively. As nowadays the students are surrounded by modern technologies, their motivation to study in the classroom decreases. The comic strips can be used as one of these innovations, as they are authentic material and contain not only the authentic language, but also the culture of the target country. The comic strips contain pictures and usually short texts, the author believes that for this reason they are motivating and easy memorable, moreover, there is a wide variety of activities that can be carried out based on the comic strips.
