Diplomdarba autors uzskata, ka visi skolēni gūst labumu no autentisko materiālu lietošanas klasē. Tie ir efektīvs līdzeklis, lai padarītu stundas interesantākas un motivētu skolēnus. Tie palīdz skolēniem sastapties ar ‘īsto’ valodu, bagātināt savas zināšanas, vārdu krājumu un attīstīt arī citas prasmes. Tā rezultātā ir vairāk iespējams, ka skolēni lietos autentiskos materiālus sava redzesloka paplašināšanai arī ārpus klases. After joining the European Union, several thousands of people from the Eastern Europe went to more developed countries to work or settle there at all. A part of people even left their children in the custody of their relatives or friends for some time. The majority of the Eastern Europeans chose Great Britain as their destination. It is very possible that in the future after graduating from secondary school, also a part of their children will move to Great Britain for some time. It is essential for an educated person to be interested not only in entertainment or fashion but also in more serious issues. Therefore, if in a class there are the students whose close people also have moved to Great Britain, the language teachers in their lessons can implement different activities about current issues of the country thus both introducing to them and raising the students’ interest in them.
The aim of the Paper was to explore the effectiveness of authentic reading materials in English lessons when used to raise secondary school students’ interest in Great Britain’s current issues. Case study was chosen as a research method during the teaching practice in Riga Hanza Secondary School. 12 students of the grade 10 were the participants of the research. For collecting data there were used such methods as the interview with the English teacher of the grade 10 before the use of authentic reading materials in English lessons and questionnaires for the students before and after participating in reading activities.
Research data showed that authentic reading materials were a useful means of raising the students’ interest in Great Britain’s current issues. The data of the questionnaires revealed that from 12 students a half of them supposed that their interest was raised a little and 5 students considered that the reading activities helped to raise their interest greatly. It means that the selection and implementation of the authentic materials were successful. Usually the students tried to be active and creative during all 3 stages of reading. They evaluated also the enrichment of their vocabulary, the learning how to justify their opinion, a development of their co-operation skills and the skill of reaching a consensus.
The Author of the Paper considers that the use of authentic materials in the classroom is beneficial for all the students. They are effective means for making the lessons more interesting and motivating the learners. With the help of them the students encounter the ‘real’ language, enrich their knowledge, vocabulary and develop also other skills. As a result, the students are more likely to use authentic materials for widening their scope also outside the classroom.
