The master’s dissertation “Philosophy as a Way of Life” explores the views Merab Mamardashvili and Pierre Hadot held on the practical aspects of philosophy. Two different yet related approaches to gaining an understanding of a philosophical life are examined.
Pierre Hadot looks at the ancient philosophy as a specific way of life from perspectives of the history of philosophy. This way of living entailed a transformation of life brought about by means of both spiritual and physical exercise. Mamardashivili, on the other hand, is analyzed as a modern philosopher, who has lived a peculiarly understood philosophical life. Examined are both Mamardashvili’s philosophical views and the ways in which they expressed in the life of the philosopher.
