Līdz ar to var tikt apšaubīta jebkuras metaforas teorijas iespējamība. The aim of this paper is to analyze the treatment of metaphor from the perspective of the far-side pragmatics of the classic period, represented by such authors as John Austin, John Searle, and Paul Grice. This account has been built on the criticism of the semantically oriented theories of metaphor (Aristotelian view and Max Black’s interaction theory) using the tools provided by the theories of pragmatics. Pragmatically oriented theories of metaphor provide both a ‘method’ for isolating metaphorical utterances and strategies for interpreting metaphors. Nevertheless, the question about the definition of metaphor is still unsettled. There are instances of creative and complicated metaphors that do not comply with the interpretational strategies of those theories. This gives reason to question the feasibility of any theory of metaphor.
