Very often in practical data analysis it is very hard to determine the real distribution of data set and there can be many reasons for that. One of the possibilities in such cases is to use nonparametric methods to estimate parameters, one of the most popular is empirical likelihood (EL) method.
The main purpose of this work is to investigate, how good EL method is, comparing with other methods. For this purpose, there was simulated data from different distributions and different methods were used to construct confidence intervals for mean and median, these methods were compared using coverage accuracy.
The main results are that EL method works very well and that it is a serious competitor to parametric methods.
