The topic of this bachelor’s thesis is „Survival strategies in urban environment: Life in a shelter”. With number of shelter residents increasing every year, the problem of homelessness becomes more relevant. The aim of this research is to realize and distinguish what affects a homeless person living in a shelter. To achieve this aim, shelter is examined through the frame of agency with particular focus on conscious capability of the individual.
The thesis consists of six chapters. The first two chapters discusses theories of agency and poverty, creating the theoretical basis and placing this work within the wider anthropologic debate. The third chapter focuses on field research, its methodology and conduction. The fourth chapter offers a general description of particular shelter structures. In the fifth chapter, acquired data are analyzed through the perspective of agency. The final chapter is devoted to conclusions and recomendations for further research and management of shelter.
