The bachelor thesis „Varied identities of the youth: their representation in the contents of magazine "Sīrups" and self-identification of its target audience (April 2010 - April 2011)” ascertain, what types of identities and social roles are represented in the youth magazine and which of them are significant to the target audience’s representatives. Overall 53 editions, from the period – april 2010 till april 2011, of the magazine ‘Sīrups’ were analyzed.
Nowadays this theme is topical, because, when becoming a media consumer, mass media is the working branch, which effects youth when it comes to designing or atleast interpreting their lifestyles.
‘Sīrups’ is the only magazine meant for youth in Latvia, it has been able to maintain a notable number of readers for 11 years.
The theoretical part of the paper consists of analysis of academic literature on identity and the process of sculpting it, youth as a social group and magazines as mass media. Quantitative and qualitative content analysis as well as partly structured interview were chosen as the methods of research.
By the end of this paper the author came to a conclusion that the most important identities for youth are the collective one’s: family-oriented, group and partly professional.
After gathering all available infromation, the conclusion is that – youth do not possess neither national, ethnical nor teritorial identity, because belonging to one of these identities means belonging to a narrow group of people.
