Over the last few years hematite nanoparticles and thin films are being widely researched for the photocatalytic application – water decomposition under the influence of sunlight. This work represents the research of hematite thin films doped with transition metals. Spray pyrolysis method is used to evaporate the precursors of hematite and doping transition metals (mostly nitrates) on a hot plate (450°C), where the formation of doped hematite structure and thin film growth occurs simultaneously. Sample structure is being studied by using the methods of X-ray diffraction and IR spectroscopy; morphology – using optical and scanning electron microscopes; optical properties are being determined to find the absorption edge and charge transfer transition of doping elements using spectrophotometer; three electrode electrochemical cell with quartz window, potentiostat and light source are used for the study of photoelectrochemical properties. The influence of doping alloy on absorption edge position and photoactivity of hematite thin film is explained.
