Atslēgvārdi: Elizabete Gaskela, ekokritika, daba, vide, piesārņojums, sociālā struktūra The subject of this bachelor thesis is the study of E. Gaskell’s novels from the point of view of ecocriticism.Although ecocritical approach to the study of literature in Britain has thus far been mostly limited to Romantic writers, no valid motifs can be found for not extending its borders. Moreover, the nature depicted in Romantic writings is not seriously endangered while the true danger coming from inconsiderate human activity towards environment can be observed in E. Gaskell’s industrial novels, which makes them a valuable source for ecocritical study. The purpose of this research is to extend the borders by focusing not only on the representation of nature, but also on the built environment existing within industrial cities, where most of the 19th century writers including E. Gaskell resided. The results reveal that Gaskell constantly emphasises the interrelation that exists between human beings and the place which they inhabit drawing attention to environmental issues
