It requires specific skills and knowledge of the two languages and cultures involved. It is, therefore, important to map how a translator gains experience and skills in translating. The purpose of this research was to pin-point the problems that hinder acquisition of new translation skills and delivery of a qualitative translation. The present paper focuses on practice that the author of this paper underwent in the course of three terms by translating material for the UL portal. The results revealed that the main problems during skill acquisition are inadequate definition of the purpose of translation, irregular time frames for completing a translation and translating into a second language.
