This work views the shorter fiction of early Latvian fantastic literature writer Janis Veselis (1896-1962) within context of the concrete literary tradition in which they were written, including the genres of fantastic literature consciously used by the author (versions of fantasy and legend) and the literary criticism of the time. J. Veselis’ ”Latvian Legends” are part of 20th century mythopoeia and aim to offer spiritual values to the nation, while his earlier, largely expressionistic, shorter works analyze the psyche and criticise and imaginatively transgress reality, including social and political circumstances.
Keywords: Janis Veselis, the fantastical (fantastic), national variations of literary genres, fantasy, legend, mythopoeia
