The aim of the doctoral dissertation is to research development of the career management and guidance system in Latvia, as well as its improvement problems for higher education graduates to improve their employability. In chapter one the author presents detailed analysis of change of the career management and career support system paradigm, models of careers and theories regarding career decision-making. Additional attention is paid to theories, which are based on behaviour of an individual within the process of career management and the necessary competences for employability in the present-day environment. The process of career guidance system is characterised by deeper analysis of its operation and development to reach its educational and employment goals in Latvia. Chapter two reflects analysis of employment of recent higher education graduates, career directions and employability. Taking into consideration the theoretical sources and empirical research of the first two chapters, chapter three presents suggestions to improve the career guidance system in higher education in the field of system management and its improvement opportunities at national, regional and institutional level. Additionally, in this chapter the author describes a model of career guidance that already exists in real life in a big university and is based on the theory of this thesis. Author also presents indicators to evaluate efficiency of the career guidance system. The total volume of the dissertation is 165 pages. The thesis includes 18 tables, 26 pictures and 14 attachments. The aim of the doctoral dissertation is to research development of the career management and guidance system in Latvia, as well as its improvement problems for higher education graduates to improve their employability. MANAGEMENT OF PROFESSIONAL INTERESTS IMPROVEMENT OF PUPILS IN CAREER EDUCATION IN LATVIA ANNOTATION The promotional paper “Management of Professional Interests Improvement of Pupils in Career Education in Latvia” has been developed with the purpose to research and scientifically substantiate possibilities of improving professional interests of pupils in career education in Latvia. Research organization of the promotional paper has been formed by considering the theoretical viewpoints regarding theories of forming professional interests, career development theories. On the basis of the performed analysis of the possible development scenarios of career education, formation of professional interests in career education has been explained, in accordance with today’s requirements. The performed research will substantially expand comprehension about necessity to form professional interests of pupils and its improvement in career education in Latvia. The promotional paper is developed at the Faculty of Pedagogy, Psychology and Art of the University of Latvia. Volume of the paper is 175 pages, it comprises 19 tables and 33 figures. Summary of Doctoral Thesis „Improving Student Support to Reduce the Dropout Rate from Studies in Higher Education Institutions in Latvia” The purpose of the doctoral thesis is to determine the ways of improving support for students to decrease the dropout rate in higher education in Latvia. By using extensive research, the thesis offers analysis of student dropping out from studies in higher education institutions in Latvia: reasons, intentions, and decisions for the dropout from studies. Research reveals correlation between intentions of the discontinuation of studies, satisfaction with studies, study choice motivation and professional identity. Study support model created in the process of research outlines various methods of support for students, of which the most important would be the student guidance and counselling system for studies. Thesis evaluates the current problems in existing guidance and counselling system for students in higher education institutions and proves the role of support for students in successful continuation of studies and in decreasing the dropout rate from studies. Based on theoretical findings and practical research, proposals for improving study guidance activities have been developed.
