Research goal is to elaborate a pupil's career management skills development model based on theoretical knowledge, verify it through experiment and summarise the research results. Hypothesis: a pupil develops career management skills more successfully, if a systematically and systemically organized career education is included in school's pedagogical process according to pupil's needs; development of pupil's career management skills is based on a meaningful cooperation between the pupil and a professional pedagogical personnel. Research basis: 827 pupils from 8th, 9th, 11th and 12th grades and 176 teachers from different Latvian schools took part in the study: 43 pupils receiving individual career guidance consultations with the author of the study; participants of the author's organized seminars and courses - 8 groups of teachers (424 participants in total) and 4 groups of parents (108 participants in total); participants of the author's organized focus groups - 53 pupils, 76 teachers and 48 parents; 36 pupils and 32 teachers interviewed by the author. Pilot group in order to carry out the experiment was comprised of seventeen 9th grade pupils and nineteen 12th grade pupils (36 in total)....

The aim of the doctoral dissertation is to research development of the career management and guidance system in Latvia, as well as its improvement problems for higher education graduates to improve their employability. In chapter one the author presents detailed analysis of change of the career management and career support system paradigm, models of careers and theories regarding career decision-making. Additional attention is paid to theories, which are based on behaviour of an individual within the process of career management and the necessary competences for employability in the present-day environment. The process of career guidance system is characterised by deeper analysis of its operation and development to reach its educational and employment goals in Latvia. Chapter two reflects analysis of employment of recent higher education graduates, career directions and employability. Taking into consideration the theoretical sources and empirical research of the first two chapters, chapter three presents suggestions to improve the career guidance system in higher education in the field of system management and its improvement opportunities at national, regional and institutional level. Additionally, in this chapter the author describes a model of career guidance that already exists in real life in a big university and is based on the theory of this thesis. Author also presents indicators to evaluate efficiency of the career guidance system. The total volume of the dissertation is 165 pages. The thesis includes 18 tables, 26 pictures and 14 attachments. Summary of Doctoral Thesis „Improving Student Support to Reduce the Dropout Rate from Studies in Higher Education Institutions in Latvia” The purpose of the doctoral thesis is to determine the ways of improving support for students to decrease the dropout rate in higher education in Latvia. By using extensive research, the thesis offers analysis of student dropping out from studies in higher education institutions in Latvia: reasons, intentions, and decisions for the dropout from studies. Research reveals correlation between intentions of the discontinuation of studies, satisfaction with studies, study choice motivation and professional identity. Study support model created in the process of research outlines various methods of support for students, of which the most important would be the student guidance and counselling system for studies. Thesis evaluates the current problems in existing guidance and counselling system for students in higher education institutions and proves the role of support for students in successful continuation of studies and in decreasing the dropout rate from studies. Based on theoretical findings and practical research, proposals for improving study guidance activities have been developed.
