The present Master Paper is devoted to the investigation of the notion of colonization in the following “the lonely island novels” also called “robinsonades”: “Robinson Crusoe” by Daniel Defoe, “The Coral Island” by Robert Ballantyne, “The Treasure Island” by Robert Stevenson, “The Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, and “Foe” by John Coetzee. In the research, the issue of colonization of lonely islands is studied thoroughly from the point of view of postcolonial theory. The theories of two remarkable postcolonial scholars Edward W. Said and Gayatri C. Spivak are applied to the analysis of the novels. The paper focuses on the development of the genre paying particular attention on the depiction of the protagonists and antagonists, symbolic connotations, postcolonial representations, and messages of the novels. The present study draws the conclusion that the analyzed novels comprise a wide range of postcolonial representations such as the notion of “otherness”, hybridity, intertextuality, counterdiscourse with canonical texts, self-reflection, and search for identity. The aforementioned features are introduced in the novels through symbolism. The research concludes that the view on colonization has changed over time: in the modern world, colonization is criticized a lot and the colonized are given back their human rights.
