Aim: to obtain data about allergic disease prevalence in children of Latvia and to study allergic disease clinical manifestations and risk factors in children of Latvia. Methods: totally 199 children were included.Patient sample included 87 children with allergic disease manifestation and 25 children with a previously diagnosed allergic disease.Control group included 87 healthy children. The parents were asked to fill out a questionnaire. Statistical analysis: χ2 test, log regression test. Results: allergic disease prevalence in studied population was 22%.In the multivariate analysis allergic disease was significantly associated with allergy in family, delivery by caesarean section, negatively associated with exclusive breast feeding less than five months. Conclusions: allergic disease prevalence in children of Latvia is comparable with Western Europe data. Our data confirm the role of genetic factors and point to possible role of gut microflora in the pathogenesis of allergy.
