Proton conducting membranes are the main elements of future electrolyze devices and fuel cells that will be as new sources for automotive and portative devices and technologies. In order the electrolyzes and energy sources will be energy efficient we should decrease the manufacturing expenses and to increase its proton conductivity. Vibration spectroscopy is one of the main methods that allows to determine membrane structure and to analyze the function groups in membranes. It allows us to notice the changes that happen in membranes after hydration, temperature treatment, etc.
In this work the vibration spectra, including FTIR and FTIR-ATR methods were used to investigate both commercial Nafion® and Fumapem® and home-made modified sulfonated PEEK membranes. The changes in spectra of protonated membranes confirm the proposed mechanism of protonation. The changes in spectra after temperature treatment of the membranes allows us to make assumptions about changes that happened in the membranes.
