Atslēgvārdi: divskanis, divskaņa komponenti, stabilais posms, divskaņa dinamika, akustiskā kvalitāte, divskaņa uztvere A research study was done to investigate the trajectory and dynamics of diphthongs in Latvian, pronounced in zero context, and to compare the acoustic quality of the components of diphthongs to the acoustic quality of the corresponding monophthongs, and also to the components of diphthongs pronounced in real sentences. Also, a perception research was done to find out if the native speakers of Latvian language normally split diphthongs into components, and if they can recognize the components of diphthongs played as individual sounds, and draw the distinction between the components of diphthongs. It was decided that a diphthong is not a junction of two monophthongs in one syllable, it is more likely an undivisible sound with a constant change of quality.
