Kopumā konstatētas 80 zirnekļu sugas no 19 dzimtām. Calcareous fens are of big conservation importance in Europe and are one of the rarest habitats in Latvia. The ecology of spiders in these habitats is not properly investigated. The aim of this study was to find out the effect of different ecological factors on ground-dwelling and grass-dwelling spiders in the Apšuciems calcareous fen. The study was carried out in the summer of 2012 with ground-dwelling spiders being collected with pitfall traps but grass-dwelling spiders – with a sweep net.
A total of 80 spider species belonging to 19 families were detected. There were different spider families that dominated in the ground-layer and in the grass-layer, however the dominant ecological groups were similar. Spiders were positively affected by the plant diversity in the fen but negatively – by the sawtooth sedge and vegetation height. In the fen spiders compete with ground beetles, rove beetles and ants but they are threatened by several insectivorous vertebrates.
