Rhododendrons are one of the widely used ornamental plants, therefore it is important to determine how to propagate them efficiently. One of the most important vegetative propagation methods is propagation by cuttings. Stock plant treatment can affect rhizogenesis of cuttings. One of the stock plant treatments is shoot etiolation; furthermore, the effect of etiolation can be increased by banding bases of the shoots. The influence of stock plant treatment can be estimated not only by rooting percentage but also by anatomical changes and such physiological processes of rhizogenesis as changes of phenolics concentration and activity of peroxidase that gives information about beginning stages of adventitious root formation. The aim of this work was to determine influence of etiolation and etiolation with banding on physiological processes and anatomical changes in stem cuttings of deciduous rhododendron hybrid R78-467/29 during rhizogenesis. Stock plant etiolation and etiolation with banding contribute bigger root ball formation without improvements in rooting percentage. Dynamics of peroxidase activity in the basal end of cuttings and stages of adventitious root formation process describe rhizogenesis in three phases: induction, initiation and expression, but changes in phenolics concentration are not consistent with these phases for none of variation. Stock plant etiolation and etiolation with banding reduce phenolics concentration in the basal end of cuttings as a result rooting percentage decreases.
