Džeinas Ostenas romāna “Emma” kritika

Abstract

Bakalaura darbs pēta Džeinas Ostinas romānam “Emma” veltīto kriticismu. Teorētiskajā daļā autore sniedz ieskatu par Džeinas Ostinas laikabiedru sniegto kritiku, divdesmitā gadsimta rakstnieku kriticisma aspektiem un diskutē par mūsdienu akadēmiskās intereses pieaugumu par Džeinu Ostinu. Praktiskajā daļā autore analizē romānam “Emma” veltīto feministu kritiku, kā arī aplūko Bildungsromāna vadlīnijas, pēta romāna “Emma” kritikas galvenos virzienus, sniedz divdesmitā gadsimta un modernā kriticisma analīzi. Papildus, darba autore salīdzina un analīzē vairākas deviņpadsmitā, divdesmitā un divdesmit pirmā gadsimta ietekmīgu kritiķu esejas un publikācijas, un novērtē to kriticisma pieejas. Pētījuma rezultāti atklāj, ka salīdzinājumā ar agrākām kriticisma pieejām, modernais kriticisms sniedz lielāku izpratni par Dženu Ostinu, kā literāro tēlu, kā arī par viņas romāniem. Modernais kriticisms aplūko romānus, balstoties uz iepriekšējo pētījumu rezultātiem, kā arī izmanto kritiskā lasījuma, kontekstuālo un socioloģisko pieeju. Tā pat modernais kriticisms pēta romāna kultūras, politiskos un sociālos aspektus mūsdienu izpratnē, kas uzsver un izskaidro Džeinas Ostinas un viņas romānu aktualitāti. Bakalaura darba pētījuma rezultātus var izmantot turpmākai klasiskās angļu literatūras kriticisma pētīšanai.

The paper examines the criticism on Jane Austen’s novel ‘Emma’. In the theoretical part the author provides an insight into the criticism of Jane Austen’s contemporaries, overview of the twentieth century critical reception of the novelist and the discussion of the rise of modern scholarship on Jane Austen. In the empirical part the author examines feminist criticism of the novel and investigates the main directions of it, analyses the criticism of the novel ‘Emma’ from the perspective of Bildungsroman, makes a comparative analysis of twentieth century and modern criticism of the novel ‘Emma’. In addition the author of the paper compares and analyses several essays and publications of important critics of nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first century and gives an evaluation to critical approaches used by the critics. The results of the study indicate that modern criticism adds more aspects to the total understanding of Jane Austen as a literary figure and her novels than earlier critical approaches. Modern criticism looks on the novels using the knowledge of past studies, but adds the combination of close reading, contextual and sociological approach. Moreover, modern criticism studies the novel through cultural, political, social and other various lenses of the modern time, which open and explain the ongoing popularity of Jane Austen and topicality of her novels. The findings can be used as a basis for further study of critical approaches on classic English literature.
