Bachelor's thesis studies epideictic rhetoric in Roman Biography: Suetonius’ The Twelve Caesars (De vita Caesarum). The main objective of the thesis is to clarify the basic principles of epideictic rhetoric applied in Suetonius’ written Caesars’ biographies basing the analysis on the ancient theory of rhetoric, especially the Roman theorists’ work. Firstly, the thesis explores works of authors which includes discussion of antique rhetoric theory to find out the main guidelines for public speaking. Secondly, epideictic rhetoric concept is thoroughly investigated. Thirdly, two important aspects of epideictic rhetoric researched - praise and censure. The study also provides a small insight into the Roman author Suetonius’ life and literary work. An important part of the treatise is to draw up a practical insight into Suetonius’ The Twelve Caesars. It analyses biographies of Roman rulers Tiberius, Caligula, Nero, and Domitian. Work has resulted in selection of specific text examples that show interaction between basic principles of praise and censure in each Caesar’s biography.
