SIGNIFICANCE OF SOIL FACTOR ON AGRICULTURAL AREAS AFFORESTATION IN PASIENE PARISH The Bachelor thesis study has been worked out in Pasiene Parish in the southeast of Latgale Uplands, where abandonment of farmlands has been observed over the past 50 years. The aim of the Bachelor thesis study is to analyse dependence of the dominant tree species in the overgrowing process on the physical and chemical properties of soil in a surface horizon in Pasiene Parish. The studied area is a 310-hectare polygon with a slightly undulating terrain at the converging expanses of Mudava hillocks and Zilupe Plain. 36 soil samples were examined for their chemical and physical properties. The land-use change was analysed on aerophotographs for the period between 1954 and 2014. The study established that the loam and sandy loam soils are present over the polygon, and they have influenced the farmland overgrowth, or land-use transformation, and that the new forest stand has affected the soil properties. The natural afforestation has been dominated by Gray Alder, Goat Willow and Birch. The sequence of abandonment of arable land is related to the granulometric properties of soil. Current research does not prove the influence of soil properties on the dominant tree species and on the process of plant succession during overgrowing.
