This bachelor thesis “The Collapse of the Tang: Factors and Developments during the Crisis of the Chinese Empire (754-906)”, aims to analyse the interplay of the multiplicity of those developments that lead to the crisis beginning from the An Lushan’s rebellion, and to analyse the factors that were the key components and actors in these events. The thesis begins with the chronological developments and moves to the factors, which are divided into internal and external factors. Internal factors consisting of the intellectual background and the key players who influenced the dynasty and the courses it took. The external factors are concerned with foreign policy and factors out of the dynasty’s direct sphere. Finally, there is a chronological look into the ways the factors played out in the final events of the dynastic collapse. In the light of the findings the structure of the fall is highly complex and although often the causes have been pinpointed to certain factors there seems not to be such single clear factor that would constitute a main reason. Also, the fall did not follow a deterministic pattern but the period of crisis also saw periods of stability, expansion of influence and growth.
