Grammar has been always considered as one of the central aspects in any foreign language teaching. The two major and contradictory approaches, such as deductive and inductive are known in grammar teaching. The goal of the Master Thesis was to investigate whether there was a significant difference in students’ achievements in the use of English tenses depending on whether they were taught deductively or inductively. The method that was used in the present paper was action research and the data collection instruments were tests and questionnaires. The participants of the research were twenty-eight first-year undergraduates majoring in English philology at a university of Latvia. The results have shown no statistical difference in the superiority of one approach over another. The students in the inductive group found the approach challenging, since they were not accustomed to it. It is concluded that it is advised to combine both approaches in teaching grammar at tertiary level.
