This thesis investigates the relevance of Van Dine’s rules in modern literature context, to examine if, despite the literature advancements, his rules have remained universal to all detective writing. Using textual analysis of selected works, interpretation, comparison, and close reading, the work succeeded in analysing the rules, and improving them, where necessary, to fit the current state of detective writing genre. It resulted in developing a new methodology to structure the plot in a detective. This discovery provides a new way authors can plan and analyze plots in detectives.
