In this master’s thesis a research is conducted on simulation models as a planning support tool. When a new planning document is developed, it is necessary to forecast the consequences of its implementation and the impact it has on the direction of spatial development set by other existing planning documents. The thesis focuses on the territory of Ķekava municipality where a new spatial plan is developed, but the existing plan artificially expanded the boundaries of populated areas and created large areas for residential and industrial use. Simulations were conducted determining the probability of changes with three methods, resulting in five simulated scenarios of land use in Ķekava municipality in year 2033. In every scenario, though with the different rates, a continuous built-up area is formed near the border with the city of Riga, while in other parts of the municipality there is a decline in forest area as a result of deforestation. It was concluded that scenario simulations are a useful support tool for development of planning documents, but it is more suitable for larger territories. Further, it has its drawbacks that affect the results or don’t allow to put it in use in planning.
