As elsewhere in the world, climate change is also observed in Latvia. Changes especially are observed in extreme values, which can take various forms, such as droughts, heat waves or floods and the associated risks. The aim of this research is to evaluate the long-term trends in extreme precipitation and flood characteristics in the Latgale region. In order to achieve the objective, there was research about the trends of long-term changes in precipitation, extreme precipitation and river flow fluctuation in the Latgale region from June to November. For the determination of the trends of long-term changes in extreme precipitation, the climate indices were calculated and the data of the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre were used to characterize the trends of long-term changes. Within the framework of this research, the atmospheric circulation conditions of these phenomena were also determined. During this research, significant changes were found in the incidence and intensity of extreme precipitation and in the total rainfall. A relation was found between cyclone trajectories, extreme precipitation, river flow rates and observed flood events.
