The title of the master thesis is “Urban dwelling gardens”. The aim of the master thesis is to explore the meanings of urban dwelling gardens for the urban residents and in a wider territorial planning and urban environment context. The main research questions are: how are urban gardens explained in social theory; what meanings do urban garden holders attach to the gardens; what are the functions of urban gardens; what are the effects of dwelling gardens on the urban environment. Several social science theories are used to provide a theoretical framework for the research: urban agriculture framework, urban green planning theory and a theory of symbolic interactionism. Empirical work is based on qualitative research methods: semi-structured interviews with the owners of urban dwelling gardens, field work observations, document analysis and interviews with experts. The results of the analysis reveal that the owners of urban dwelling gardens attach different meanings and values to their gardening activities and the garden as a physical and natural space in the city. Garden is also a significant part of the household economy. The food production on small residential gardens supports the household food provision and contributes to the physical, social and environmental wellbeing of urban communities. The green space gardens form an essential part of the quality of life of urban residents and isa development asset in urban environment.
