The Master’s thesis “Russian Social Media Influence Operation Deterrence Approaches and Their Effectiveness in the Pre-Election Period” identified activities that the U.S.A. and Germany used to deter Russian social media influence operations and assessed the intensity of influence operations after the deterring activities which were categorized by deterrence approaches. The intensity of influence operations was determined by quantitatively analyzing number of Twitter posts and Facebook ad purchases. The social media posts and ads that were analyzed are linked to Russia's Internet Research Agency. The study concluded that the intensity of Russian social media influence operations has not systematically and significantly declined after the deterring activities that the U.S.A. and Germany used regardless of deterrence approach applied.
