vecāku forma (Manual for the ASEBA school-age forms & profiles; Achenbach
&Rescorla, 2001), Beka depresijas aptauja (BDI – II Beck Depression Inventory;
Beck, Steer, & Brown, 1996) un Emociju regulācijas aptauja aptauja (Emotion
Regulation Questionnaire; Gross & John, 2003). Pētījuma otrajā etapā, no mātēm,

The research aimed to determine whether and what are the correlations between
maternal nonverbal attunement with a child, maternal depression symptoms, maternal
emotion regulation strategies and rates of child's externalizing and internalizing
behaviour problems. The research was held in two phases. At the first phase, 218
mothers with children aged 7 to 11 years, filled in the Child Behaviour Checklist
(Manual for the ASEBA school-age forms & profiles; Achenbach &Rescorla, 2001);
the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI II Beck Depression Inventory; Beck, Steer, &
Brown, 1996); and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (Emotion Regulation
Questionnaire; Gross & John, 2003). At the second phase, of all mothers who took
part at the first phase, 30 mothers and their children performed creative tasks.
Maternal nonverbal attunement with a child was determined using the Nonverbal
Attunement Scale (Vende, 2011).
Research findings indicate that there is a correlation between maternal emotion
regulation strategy cognitive reappraisal and rates of her child's externalizing
behaviour problems (aggression) and internalizing behaviour problems. There is a
negative correlation between maternal emotion regulation strategy expressive
suppression and rates of internalizing behaviour problems. More prominent level of
maternal depression symptoms and less prominent maternal expressive suppression
predict her child's internalizing behaviour problems. More prominent maternal level
of maternal depression symptoms and child's gender (a boy) predict externalizing
behaviour problems.
Maternal nonverbal attunement (joint attention) is correlated to lower rates of
child's internalizing behaviour (withdrawn behaviour). There is a tendency to
correlation between maternal nonverbal attunement (joint attention) and lower rates of
child's internalizing behaviour (anxiety). There is a tendency to correlation between
maternal nonverbal attunement (joint attention and bodily coherence) and higher rates
of child's externalizing behaviour (rule-breaking behaviour). Maternal emotion
regulation strategy expressive suppression is correlated to her nonverbal attunement
(joint attention). Child's ability to mirror the mother nonverbally is negatively
correlated to level of maternal depression symptoms. There is a tendency to
correlation between child's ability to mirror the mother nonverbally and problems of
child's externalizing behaviour (rule-breaking behaviour).
Comparing aspects of nonverbal attunement in a mother, who featured high
rates of nonverbal attunement and aspects of nonverbal attunement in a mother, who
featured low rates of nonverbal attunement, it can be observed that both mothers use
such aspects of nonverbal attunement as posture, joint attention, time, but what differs
is a quality of usage of those aspects. Namely, the mother who featured high rates of
nonverbal attunement, in her nonverbal communication with a child used similar and
mutually coherent posture, she established joint attention with her child more often,
and was more coherent with her child in time, than to the mother who featured low
rates of nonverbal attunement. Coding scheme of nonverbal attunement provides an
opportunity to analyze maternal "bodily coherence" and "joint attention", and this
scheme has a high credibility between evaluators.
