In this study it was predicted that the information about a societal transition from heteronormative to inclusive gender norms will be seen as a threat by men who hold strong heteronormative beliefs and who identify strongly with their gender group, which will result in heightened gender essentialism (1st hypothesis) and more negative attitudes towards gender and sexual minorities (2nd hypothesis). Two four-way ANOVA’s (2x2x2x2) were conducted to test both hypotheses. Both hypotheses were rejected, but the interactions between the variables pointed to the idea, that there is a reason to expect a reaction to the threat of social change for a specific group of people. For more solid conclusions, it would be necessary to conduct more studies using an updated manipulation material, and with more than one experimental group.
