Mathematical morphology contains methods to analyze and process geometrical structures. For these reasons it has been proposed to use mathematical morphology operators in image processing when the shape of objects in an image is paramount. Mathematical morphology operators, which originally are defined for sets and thus binary images, have been developed for grayscale images and partially adapted for colour images. In this paper we describe the main methods used to process binary, grayscale and colour images based on mathematical morphology. Also the main problems encoutered by processing colour images are discussed. Finally, a new method for image selective segmentation based on a chosen colour is proposed.
