Ideofonu lietojums korejiešu vebtūnos un to tulkojums angļu valodā

Abstract

Šī bakalaura darba nosaukums ir “Ideofonu lietojums korejiešu vebtūnos un to tulkojums angļu valodā”. Darbā tiek pētītas pašreizējās metodes, ar kuru palīdzību korejiešu ideofoni vebtūnos tiek tulkoti angļu valodā. Tā kā Dienvidkorejas kultūra paliek arvien populārāka, vajadzība pēc kvalitatīviem tulkojumiem kļūst aizvien jūtamāka. Lielākā daļa ideofonu angļu valodā ir onomatopoētismi, savukārt korejiešu ideofoni aptver daudz plašāku satura apjomu. Tas padara korejiešu ideofonu tulkošanu angļu valodā visnotaļ sarežģītu, un tulkojumos ir nepieciešamība lietot gan ideofonus, gan ne-ideofoniskus vārdus. Darba sākumā tika izvirzīta hipotēze, ka korejiešu ideofoni, kas apraksta skaņas un darbības, varētu tikt tulkoti ar angļu ideofoniem, bet korejiešu ideofoni, kas apraksta manieri un emocijas – ar ne-ideofoniskiem vārdiem. Līdz ar to šī bakalaura darba mērķi bija: • 1. daļā izpētīt un salīdzināt fonosemantiku un ideofonus korejiešu un angļu valodā; • 2. daļā apkopot un klasificēt datus no korejiešu vebtūniem un to angļu tulkojumiem; • 3. daļā analizēt katru tulkošanas metodi ar specifiskiem piemēriem un izvērtēt katras metodes efektivitāti. Pēc šo darba mērķu paveikšanas ir jāsecina, ka hipotēze ir apstiprinājusies tikai daļēji, jo korejiešu ideofoni, kas apraksta skaņas, tika lielākoties tulkoti ar angļu ideofoniem, tomēr korejiešu ideofoni, kas apraksta darbības, manieri un emocijas, tika lielākoties atveidoti ar ne-ideofoniskiem vārdiem. Dati arī apliecināja, ka visbiežāk izmantotā stratēģija, korejiešu ideofonu tulkošanai ir angļu ideofonu piemeklēšana, kā arī tulkošana ar ne-ideofoniskiem vārdiem. Kā tulkošanas metode tika lietota arī transkripcija, taču diezgan reti, ņemot vērā, ka šāda tulkošanas pieeja šķiet diezgan problemātiska.

This bachelor’s thesis is titled “The Use of Ideophones in Korean Webtoons and their Translation into English”. It examines the current methods of translating Korean ideophones into English within the medium of webtoons. As South Korean culture becomes more and more popular, the need for quality translations becomes more acute. Whereas most English ideophones are onomatopoeias, Korean ideophones can convey a much broader array of ideas. This makes the translation of Korean ideophones into English quite difficult and necessitates the use of both ideophones and non-ideophonic words. Therefore, the following hypothesis was proposed: Korean ideophones describing sounds and actions will by mainly translated with English ideophones, while Korean ideophones describing manner and emotions will be mainly rendered by non-ideophonic words. Subsequently, the main objectives of this thesis were: • in part 1, to examine and compare sound symbolism and ideophones in Korean and English; • in part 2, to collect and classify data from Korean webtoons and their English translations; • in part 3, to analyse each method of translation with specific examples and evaluate its effectiveness. After these objectives were completed, it was concluded that the hypothesis was only partially correct, as Korean ideophones describing sound were mainly translated with English ideophones, however Korean ideophones describing actions, manner and emotions were mostly translated with non-ideophonic English words. The data also showed that the most common method of translating Korean ideophones into English was with English ideophones, as well as with non-ideophonic English words. Transcription as a translation method was also used, although quite rarely, as such a translating approach appears to be quite problematic.
