In simultaneous interpreting, linguistic interference is seen as a widespread error that contaminates the target language with unwanted elements from the source language. The aim of this thesis is to determine the effect of lexical interference on the accuracy and clarity of the message in simultaneous interpreting from English into Latvian and from Latvian into English. By employing content analysis and contrastive analysis, the paper examines the scope, types and impact of lexical interference. The results demonstrate that lexical interference is more common and varied when interpreting into the native language, but it causes significantly stronger distortion of the original message when interpreting into the foreign language. It can be concluded that lexical interference is an impediment to conveying an accurate and clear message in simultaneous interpreting, especially when working into the foreign language.
