Atslēgvārdi: sociālie tīkli, sportista komandas biedri, profesionālās karjeras attīstība, sociālā mācīšanās, aģentu tīkli, sociālais kapitāls The aim of master’s thesis “The importance of social networks in the development of career of professional athletes” is to research the importance of social connections in the life of professional athletes – how the people who are around the athlete and are in athlete’s life are connected with the development of his/her professional career (how they impact that the athlete chooses the particular career and to continue it as well as that he/she achieves something in his/her career). Study’s theoretical basis looks at Albert Bandura’s social learning theory, agent network theory as well as social capital theory. Empirical research was based on 6 in-depth semi structured interviews with professional athletes and content analysis of the interviews was performed in order to reach the aims of the study and answer the research questions. Key findings of the study are that particularly important to athletes has been the moral and financial support from the social networks. Also, the majority of athletes in the interviews especially highlighted these two types of support, when trying to characterize the impact of various social networks on their sport career development overall. Keywords: social networks, athlete’s team members, professional career development, social learning, agent networks, social capital
