The aim of the master's thesis “Ideological orientation and views on freedom of speech by population of Latvia” is to find out the connection between the views of the Latvian population on freedom of speech and its restriction on social media and the values of conservatism and liberalism. The work provides a theoretical explanation of the concept of freedom of speech, highlights the problems of hate speech and other types of extreme speech in social media, as well as explains the restriction of freedom of speech within the theory of tolerance. The paper also examines the distinction between liberal and conservative value orientation, as well as the theory of postmaterialism. An Internet survey of inhabitants of Latvia aged 18 to 75 has been used as the research method of this study. The study concluded that support for liberal values predicts greater support for freedom of speech in general. Inhabitants with a higher liberal value orientation are more in favor of restricting expressions that are hostile to sexual and religious minorities and call for restrictions on women's rights. On the other hand, inhabitants with a higher conservative value orientation are more in favor of restricting expressions that are hostile to Christians and Latvians and support for the use of marijuana. The study concludes that generally the greater support for freedom of speech the less support there is for restricting content on social media. Inhabitants who are more supportive on restricting content on social media are more likely to be materialists than post-materialists. The study partially confirms the hypothesis that a higher level of tolerance reduces support for content restriction on social media, as well as hypothesis that, inhabitants with more liberal value orientation are more likely to agree that content restriction on social media has a negative impact on society.
