The main aim of the bachelor’s paper is to analyse the aspects of postmodern intertextuality and (re)construction of reality and (de)construction of history in the literary works of Peter Ackroyd, a British postmodernist, writer, theorist, literature specialist and a winner of several awards in literature. Two of his novels have been dealt with, compared, contradistinguished and analysed in the paper, namely, “Chatterton” (1987) and “Hawksmoor” (1985). Both the literary works have been praised, recognised by the critics and analysed worldwide. The novels comprise all the features of postmodernist writing, and their genre is called the historiographical metanovel. The bachelor’s paper gives an outline of postmodernism as a cultural and political process that emerged in the middle of the 20th century. It furnishes and examines the information about the conditions for its emergence and outlines the major theories of postmodernism in cultural, literary and language studies. Intertextuality as an important element of a postmodern literary production has been dealt with and examined in the third chapter of the paper. The genre of the historiographical metanovel, its emergence as well as its aims and challenges nowadays have been addressed in the second chapter of the paper. In both the novels “Chatterton” (1987) and “Hawksmoor” (1985), a plot is focused on investigation; however, these texts are not detective stories in their classical conception. Furthermore, both the narratives have a complex chronotope, manifested in the narrative transition from one historical time to another, deconstructing the past and reconstructing the present, referring to the particular historical characters and events having been combined with those of the fictional characters and events.en_US
