The study validates the field-based project work "Urban Cultural Landscapes" in high school geography, analysing its impact on improving students' learning performance and the development of spatial thinking. Data were collected from questionnaires submitted by 60 high school students, who participated in the research project "Urban Cultural landscapes" in the subject of geography in Jelgava in 2022. Using a mixed-methods research paradigm, participants' opinions on urban development opportunities were explored by collecting both qualitative and quantitative data. Qualitative data were obtained before and after the surveys, while quantitative data were gathered from the analysis of the results of the students' research projects. Through the project work, the participants acquired practical skills in urban geography by hypothesizing, collecting field data on cultural elements, processing information on GIS software, collaborating in groups, and increasing their understanding of urbanization developments. The conclusions were similar to both qualitative and quantitative treatment of data research. The students already had a positive perception of urban development opportunities prior to the study. The main findings of geography teachers’ interviews indicated that the project work method was feasible in schools, but the small number of lessons per week made the process difficult to organise. Geography teachers arrange project work 1-2 times a term. The project method combined with the field research has a positive impact on students' perception of the learning process and enables them to acquire new knowledge that can be applied in everyday life.
