The title of the master's thesis is “A comparative analysis on the journalist and natural person rights on information”. As part of the work, the author examines whether the rights of a journalist are wider than the rights of a private person, including whether the concept of a journalist is different from that of a person of journalistic interest. The author examines the right to protect sources of information as a journalist's privilege, or there are exceptions that may interfere in the journalist's privilege of protecting sources of information. As part of the work, the author comes to the conclusion that the definition is being translated narrowly in Latvia, and it is also important for a journalist to protect its sources, but respect for the principles of journalism is threatened because there are more and more people who disseminate information on social networks, but they are not subject to respect for the principles of journalism or respect for the principles of media ethics, but they can reach more audience than journalists. The author concludes that the problem should be addressed by extending the concept of journalist, with the journalist being understood by individuals who regularly obtain and disseminate information. The author proposes, as part of the work, that the problem could be addressed by a high standard, including the definition of rights and obligations not only for journalists, but also for those who regularly obtain and disseminate information.
