Citizen science is a part of open science, which can be used in all branches of science, applying various research methods. By participating in citizen science projects, libraries have the opportunity to be included in the process of science popularization, to activate the local community for specific purposes, and to increase the efficiency ratio from the point of view of their financier (state or local government). The aim of the work is to identify the current Latvian citizen science processes in the European context and to find out the desire, readiness and opportunities of Latvian libraries to get involved in them. The theoretical part of the work examines science communication models and the network society theory. An insight into the development of citizen science in Latvia is provided, as well as the possibilities of citizen science in libraries are outlined, highlighting current Latvian projects. The results of the study reveal that citizen science initiatives in the library certainly involve new challenges, but they are necessary for the library to be a center of knowledge for its community.
