The bachelor thesis investigates the suitability of the soil biological quality (QBS) index for Latvian soils. 6 sites were selected from two soil projects "BioSoil" and "Improving Sustainable Soil Resource Management in Agriculture", a grassland project "GrassLIFE" and one site from Kristaps Auziņš master thesis (Auziņš 2020). The sample plots are located in Platone, Auru, Babīte, Taurene, Valka and Kaive municipalities with different land use and management: agricultural land, different types of forests and natural grassland. For the study, 10 soil samples were collected from each site. The soil samples were placed in a photothermal eclector and then examined under a microscope to count the microarthropods and to determine their taxonomic affiliation. To calculate the QBS index, each group of microarthropods had to be scored with an ecomorphological value (EMI) according to the given table (Parisi et al. 2005) on the adaptation of microarthropods to the soil environment. The final calculation is to sum the EMI values assigned to all the microarthropod groups found, resulting in a QBS index value per sample.
