Atslēgas vārdi: kreativitāte, depresija The aim of the term paper was to research the association betwen creativity and depression among students and to understand the risk factors of depression for creative individuals.
The sample of this study consisted of 58 students, 22,4% of whom were male and 77,6% were female. The age of the participants varied from 20 to 29 years (M = 22,55, SD = 2,10). Two measurement instruments were used in the term paper: 1) Beck Depression Inventory (BDI – II; Beck, Steer, & Brown, 1996), which has been adapted in Latvia by S. Voitkāne un S. Miezīte (2001). 2) Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory – 2 (MMPI-2, Butcher, Graham, Dahlstro,Tellegen, & Kammer, 1989), which has been adapted in Latvia by Jānis Grants. For the purposes of this study three scales were used: the reliability scale, the depression scale and the C scale. The C scale, which has been developed by C. Nassif (2004), measures the general creativity level.
Results of this term paper show that associations between depression and creativity in the student sample do not exist. The results suggest that the depression could be as harmful factor for creative students as for any other students, and that the influence of the depression on creativity could be overvalued in the popular culture.
Key words: creativity, depression
