Pētījumā piedalījās 115 pieaugušie vecumā no 18 līdz 67

2 The aim of this study is to examin the relations among causality orientation, contingencies
of self-worth and drinking motives. There were used four questionnaires – The General Causality
Orientation Scale (Deci & Ryan, 1985), Contingencies of Self-Worth Scale (Crocker, Luhtanen,
Cooper, & Bouvrette, 2003), The Drinking Motives Questionnaire - Revised (Cooper, 1994) and
The Drinking level Scale. The study included 115 adults aged 18 to 67 years with work
experience and in the last six months they have consumed alcohol more than 1 time.
The results confirmed that causality orientation and contingencies of self-worth is
significantly related with drinking motives. Those individuals who demonstrate higher level of
autonomous orientation, consume alcohol in small quantities to regulate their affect - enjoying
the pleasant feelings and relaxing, and it can be assumed as the adaptive use of alcohol.
Individuals with high controlled orientation consume alcohol to overcome the difficulties
associated with uncertainty sense of self, and the use of alcohol does not help diminish their
distress. While people with high rates of impersonal orientation consume it to avoid from
rejection in group because they feel insecure in relationships with other people.
Low alcohol consumption is associated with contingencies of self-worth depends on
family support and moral virtues. In contrast, the desire to experience their competence,
especially compared themselves with others and assessing their achievements, have a significant
impact on alcohol motivation - it motivates people to consume alcohol in order to build and
strengthen relationships and reduce anxiety caused by difficulties, and enhance their sense of
competence. There is significant relatedness among contingencies of self-worth depends on
appearance and positive and negative affective regulation by the alcohol consumption.
Key words: causality orientation; contingencies of self-worth; drinking motives; motivational
